I’m writing an article in order to answer the question, “how much calories should I intake every day to slim down?”
This is an extremely common question, which isn’t surprising as modern health authorities are continuously saying that people eat a lot of calories per day and should cut back.
I have a difficult time doing this, as, for me, calorie counting is not that crucial. This is because the number of people suffering from obesity are still increasing regardless of how much they know about their calorie intake.
It is true that calories matter, but I think this is something regular people shouldn’t worry about.
For now, let’s think that the “calories in, calories out” theory works and that you could just shed weight by just quitting eating your favorite foods (junk foods, for example).
This theory tells us that people are becoming overweight because they eat more food than they “burn” food. The calorie content of these extra food are then turned by the body into fat, giving our body extra weight and will later result in obesity.
If you were to shed 30 pounds with this method and targeting a 500 calorie deficit every day, then you’d need to weigh each and every piece of food you eat and calculate the calories in it, everyday for 7 months.
Let’s assume that you’ve an insanely strong self-control and are willing to let yourself undergo many months of feeling hungry and energy deprived. Do you think it will have positive results after that?
You are going to have to continue this, since otherwise you are going to gain that weight back.
Plus there are several problems with calorie counting.:
Your metabolic rate depends upon height, body fat levels, age, sex, activity level, hormones, genetics and many more factors.
The metabolism changes with time and it will decrease during long periods of calorie restriction.
The brain controls body fat levels, and it’ll raise your hunger and decrease your activity levels to try and withstand any changes.
In addition, weighing food will take a toll on your daily life. You won’t be able to eat out at restaurants or other peoples houses, and it is just totally annoying and unsustainable.
Of course, this is a recipe for disaster. People wouldn’t wish to weigh in and count the number of calories they will intake on each and every food they consume, that is necessary if they wish to shed their weight this way.
I also happen to believe that the human race is something more than only a big group of gluttons who are unable to control themselves.
I will discuss a hormone that is vital to your body, and I am certain that you’ve heard of it already.
Insulin is mainly known for controlling blood sugar levels, and a lack of it makes people become diabetes sufferers.
What insulin also does, is to function as a gatekeeper to your fat cells.
Once levels of insulin are raised, the body’s fat cells are now “ordered” to store fat, and make sure that the amount of fat inside it does not get out.
With high insulin levels, even if you are taking significantly low calorie content, you’ll still have difficulty removing the content from your fat cells.
This will make your body feel energy deprived and your brain will respond. Which then results to the inevitable “hunger”.
What I suggest, is selecting foods that do not cause a big amount of insulin release.
The macronutrient that releases the greatest amount of insulin is carbohydrate. A single drop of carbohydrate significantly reduces insulin levels.
In this way, some of the fat stored inside the body are burned and the sense of hunger goes away. The science proves it.
Appetite is reduced and the body starts using its own body fat for energy.
Fat loss is not about calories, it’s about eating the kinds of foods that encourage weight reduction.
Thus to slim down, it’s not how many calories should I eat, except this is a method that has given you results before.
The better question could be: how much carbs should I take daily in order to shed weight?
