Arthritis can be an extremely harsh medical condition characterized by swollen and painful joints. If you suffer from it then arthritis pain relief is likely to be a daily concern.

There are many types of arthritis, and each one has its own set of unique symptoms that can differ in severity and occur in different parts of the body. However, all types of arthritis will include symptoms such as stiff and sore joints and muscles, making arthritis pain relief a common goal of everyone with one of the arthritis types.

You may also find yourself experiencing flu-like symptoms, exhaustion, rashes and potentially the formation of small lumps or nodules in the affected areas. The two primary types of arthritis include those that produce soreness, and those that do not. Both produce different forms of soreness.

Keep in mind that the form of arthritis pain relief most suitable for you depends very much on the type of arthritis you are dealing with. When developing your own treatment plan, in conjunction with your doctor’s advice of course, consider the overall objectives for your arthritis pain relief.

You need to take steps to sustain the joint function while at the same time slowing down the progression of the disease. You want to maintain your range of motion while at the same time mitigating damage to the joints. Luckily, many forms of arthritis pain relief do exist.

In the majority of cases where you involve your doctor medications will take on a primary roll in your arthritis relief. These include analgesics, NSAIDs, Corticosteroids, DMARDs, and COX-2 Inhibitors. You should contact your physician about the benefits of various medicines, how long their effects take, and any side effects that they could cause.

Also, several shots can be given directly into the joint. Local steroid shots can be given for particular, painful joints. Most doctors only allow up to three of these shots annually. Another procedure, called viscosupplementation inserts a substance resembling gel, into the joint.

Natural treatments, or alternative treatments are also widely used to achieve arthritis pain relief . However, they have not been proven to be safe or efficient. Examples of alternative treatments include supplements, acupuncture, massage, yoga, biofeedback, and medication.

Complementary medicine varies from alternative medicine in that the former is used along with a traditional treatment. Complementary treatments can include nutritious diets, stress management, and regular exercise.

Surgery on joints typically is used as the last option for arthritis pain relief. It is basically used when other treatments have produced substandard results, or no longer function. Surgery is ideal with joint damage has become relentless and everyday tasks have become unbearable.

Arthritis sufferers often experience excruciating pain. No one form of arthritis pain relief will be effective for all types of arthritis. However, after a little research and some trial and error you will be able to find your own personal strategy to achieve effective arthritis pain relief for your situation.

Psoriasis Arthritis is prevalent all over the world, but as yet no cure has been discovered. This type of arthritis has a relationship with psoriasis, a common skin conditon, and is characterized by scaly patches on your skin along with swelling and painful joints.

If you have psoriatic arthritis, it is important to understand how it works so that you can work with your doctor to find the most effective arthritis pain relief treatment options for this particular type of arthritis.

You will likely be experiencing swelling in joints of the body like your wrists, knees, and elbows. Therefore part of your arthritis joint pain relief regimen will likely involve medication or creams to reduce this swelling. Psoriatic arthritis also produces dry, grey areas of skin surrounding your joints, and you may have pitted nails or lesions around the fingernails. Therefore your treatment plan will also need to take into account areas of your body that are presenting these symptoms.

Although the cause of psoriatic arthitis remains unknown, experts believe that a combination of genetic predispositions and environmental factors play a role in the development of psoriatic arthritis. Onset can occur at any age and with any gender, race, and ethnicity, but the most common age for psoriatic arthritis to begin is between 20 and 50 years of age.

This condition is tricky to treat because patients are essentially dealing with two fused diseases-one of the skin and one of the joints. Because of this, it is important to talk with your doctor or other medical professionals about the drugs you are taking for each, as many drugs can have a negative interaction. There are many options other than medication that you can use to treat this disease.

For example, some exercises work especially well with these patients to reduce swelling and pain in the joints, making them effective for arthritis pain relief. You can also begin skin therapy to treat the psoriatic part of this disease. Heat and cold can be effectively used to treat psoriatic arthritis, as can rest, which is important for all arthritis patients. Splints and surgery are rarely used, but the options are available for more extreme conditions. Cosmetically, this disease can be treated with laser surgery light treatment, or other corrective cosmetic surgeries. Talk to you doctor to find out more about this disease and your options for treatment.

One effective option for arthritis pain relief is adopting an arthritis diet. Although there is no real proof that certain foods will help or hinder your condition, sufferers are usually advised to adopt a healthy diet, watch their weight, and avoid overdoing the carbs, stick with a low-fat diet, and avoid soda and acidic foods.

Most physicians suggest glucosamine supplementation, which is a natural substance found in the body, and is contained in the fluid that fills the space between your joints. Glucosamine is generally found in food; it is something your body produces naturally. If your body is not producing enough of it, the taking glucosamine supplements can be an effective arthritis pain relief treatment option.

There are a number of foods and dietary supplements that may be helpful to arthritis sufferers.Antioxidants, including vitamins C and E have been known to provide relief. Research has suggested that drinking a glass of orange juice daily may lower the risk of developing some inflammatory forms of arthritis, as carotenoids including beta-cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin have been found to have a protective effect.

Beta-cryptoxanthin is an active form of Vitamin A. Vitamin A is recognized as being important for skin and bone health, as well as immune function. Some fruits and vegetables that are rich in this vitamin are yellow apples, apricots, cantaloupes, grapefruit, lemons, mangos, oranges, peaches, pineapples, carrots, sweet corn, and sweet potatoes.

Some doctors and sufferers believe that particular foods act as allergens and trigger arthritis flares, so should be avoided when on an arthritis diet. Suspected foods include caffeine, dairy products, nightshade vegetables (for example, tomatoes and peppers), sugar, additives and preservatives, chocolate, red meats, and salt. Doctors also recommend weight loss for some sufferers since it can help serve in the relief of the pressure on the joints. A healthy diet, as everyone knows, is essential in weight loss.

Other helpful dietary supplements include ginger, which has been known to moderately alleviate knee symptoms, and Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil. Vitamins B9 and B12 have been found to significantly reduce hand pain by presumably reducing systemic inflammation, but only when taken in large doses. Patients with arthritis may have a vitamin D deficiency, so supplementation with vitamin D3 is recommended for arthritis pain relief.

Often times a person’s diet depends on the type of arthritis they suffer from. Those suffering from osteoarthritis are told to increase their saturated fat intake while those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis are urged to maintain a diet high in protein and calcium but avoid too much weight gain. However, there is no one effective arthritis diet to totally alleviate arthritis pain.

Our childhood should be one of the most joyful periods of our lives. Everything from a bright fluttering butterfly to learning how to ride a bicycle, to watching our father repair a car engine, seems new and exciting. We have no sense of the future, and believe that every day will be like today. Minor sicknesses such as the chicken pox, measles, and mumps, seem to be a routine part of childhood. However, more serious ailments, such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, can be extremely taxing for young boys and girls making arthitis pain relief a primary concern.

Based on our personal experiences alone, most of us know that arthritis is a medical condition in which the joints in one’s bodies become swollen and painful. However, several types of arthritis exist, including one referred to as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), or juvenile arthritis. This disease affects children aged 16-years-old or younger. The sufferer experiences swelling and stiffness for over six weeks. Three types of juvenile arthritis exist, and are based on symptoms, how many joints are affected, and whether or not blood tests uncover particular antibodies.

One half of all kids with juvenile arthritis have Pauciarticular JRA. A maximum of four joints are affected. Girls less than 8-years-old are most liable to develop this juvenile rheumatoid arthritis type, which usually affects large joints like the knees.

Next, roughly a third of all kids with juvenile arthritis, suffer from Polyarticular JRA. This disease affects at least five joints. While huge joints can be affected, Polyarticular JRA tends to smaller joints (i.e. in feet and hands). It is noteworthy that this form of arthritis affects the identical joint on both halves of the child’s body.

Thirdly, in addition to joint swelling, systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis typically causes minor skin irritation and fever, and can even involve internal organs which include the spleen, heart, and liver. About 20% of all children who suffer from juvenile JRA, suffer from systemic JRA.

Causes And Care

The three forms of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis are all autoimmune disorders. In other words, the child’s body errs in classifying some of its very own tissues and cells as alien. The result is that the body’s immune system starts to attack healthy tissues and cells. Scientists believe that both environmental and genetic factors cause juvenile arthritis to develop in youngsters.

Several indicators reveal that a child suffers from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. They include:

constant swelling of the joints
continuous stiffness that usually worsens after sleeping
eye irritation
frequent pain
growth problems
heart and lung problems
high fever and minor skin rash
limping during the morning
problems involving joints in the feet and hands, and knees
swelling of nymph nodes

Once a child has been diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, several types of treatment exist. They include physical therapy, biologic agents (i.e. etanercept), disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, alternative and complementary medicine, corticosteroids , and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (i.e. aspirin and ibuprofen)

Childhood diseases such as juvenile arthritis are difficult for any child to endure. However, as the diagnoses and treatments improve, the disease will become more bearable for youngsters—who all deserve a joyful childhood.

It’s a viscous cycle. You know your should exercise to achieve arthritis pain relief, but your body hurts too much to move. You might not be able to do the activities you once could, but you can still be active. The hardest part about arthritis treatment is beginning it. It gets easier and easier once you keep at it. You can help your joints and your arthritis pain relief therapy by not being too demanding of yourself and not comparing your results with others.

Jump In The Water

Non-aerobic exercise means low-impact exercise that still gives your body a work out, but at much less stress levels. A lot of people find swimming, water aerobics or water walking to be their arthritis treatment of choice. Not only is it fun, but pools are widely available all over the country. Check to see if your YMCA, health club or gym has senior rates (if you are the appropriate age). Many towns and cities have senior centers that provide low-cost and monitored activities for seniors. Access to a pool is often one of them.

Tai Chi

There are many gentle and interesting arthritis treatments that you can do on dry land. There are many non-aerobic exercise systems based on centuries old Oriental techniques. These include yoga, Pilates and the martial arts. They not only promote balance, coordination and physical strength, but a mental serenity and a chance to relax from your worries by going into a series of various positions. Tai chi is gentle and is often encouraged for arthritis pain relief because there usually is not a lot of bending or lying down involved. Since there are many schools of Tai Chi – some more gymnastic than others – be sure to let your instructor know of your arthritis so you won’t hurt yourself.

Gardening

Digging around in the dirt and clay is the arthritis treatment of choice for many others. This is something which takes you outside, gets you in eye contact with the neighbors and lets you express your creativity. It also gives gentle, repetitive motions and can be eased with arthritis-friendly gardening products. You’re never too old to garden. And gardening addresses the holistic nature of illnesses such as arthritis, which hurts not only your joints, but your sense of self-worth. If you don’t have a yard, you can always use flowerpots or a window box. Your senior center may also feature a communal garden for arthritis treatment.

Inflammatory arthritis need not take over your life. You will need to make some lifestyle changes, but in time, you should be able to gain control over your inflammatory arthritis and live a long and healthy life.

You don’t have to make huge changes to your diet when you have inflammatory arthritis, but keeping as close to your ideal weight as possible will help effect a degree of arthritis pain relief. First, determine with your doctor what your ideal weight (or ideal weight range) should be. If you are underweight, you should consider taking in more healthy nutrient rich calories to help fuel your body. You need to eat healthy foods, not just grab any old thing.

If you are overweight, you actually have the easier job than trying to put weight on. You still need to eat, but need to eat foods low in fat, low in preservatives and low in empty calories. Empty calories are foods and drinks that can give you fat, but not much else in the way of nutrition. Alcoholic beverages are classic examples of empty calories. So are carbonated, caffeinated sodas or pop. Even water is more nutritious for you – and doesn’t have any calories (unless you add a flavor powder to it).

Regular Exercise

It is vital to stay as active as possible when you have inflammatory arthritis. If you don’t, your joints will loose what elasticity they have left. Regular exercise not only keeps them supple, but helps your body’s auto-immune system and just about every other system, too. Remember, exercise does not mean sweating it in a gym or training for the Olympics. Washing the car is exercise. Walking to the post office and back is exercise. Gardening is exercise and can be effective for arthritis pain relief.

Some people with inflammatory arthritis prefer to exercise with others because they also get the benefit of social interaction. It is good to keep your brain and social skills exercised and limber as well as your joints. And it can boost self-confidence and lower stress, which can contribute to any kind of illness, including inflammatory arthritis.

Regular Check Ups

Although it might seem like a drag, you really need regular check ups with your doctor in order to get your inflammatory arthritis in line. You might need tests to be sure you are not developing any side effects from your medication. This also keeps up with your social interaction and brain stimulating skills.

One of the most prevalent forms of arthritis is known as degenerative arthritis. Also known as osteoarthritis, degenerative arthritis is a slowly progressive arthritis of unknown cause which affects several joints, and tends to occur in elderly people.

Aging is the number one contributor to the development of this disease. Other factors include: previous joint injuries, overuse of a joint, weight issues, and family history since degenerative arthritis can be genetic in nature (inherited from your relatives).

The most commonly reported symptom of degenerative arthritis is pain in the affected joints after repetitive use. It is important to realize that unlike other certain types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis and gouty arthritis, that this form does not affect any other organs of the body.

Swelling, warmth, and a creaking of the bones and joints are all common symptoms as well, and in more severe cases, complete loss of cartilage cushion causes friction between bones, and results in causing pain with limited motion.

The symptoms will vary from one person to another, as some people while experience intense pain while others notice nothing at all. Symptoms can also be intermittent, being that they go into remission for a while and then reappear some time afterwards. It is especially not unusual for patients with degenerative arthritis to have pain-free intervals between symptoms.

Over time, this form of arthritis will result in causing the formation of hard bony enlargements of the small joints of the fingers, and this bone deformity is a result of the bone spurs from the degenerative arthritis in that joint. If you ever experience any of the symptoms mentioned here, then it is crucial that you get in to see your doctor as soon as possible so that a proper diagnosis can be made.

Once you have been diagnosed, if it is determined that you do in fact have degenerative arthritis, now is the time that treatment will be decided.

Treatment

There is as of yet no specific treatment available for degenerative arthritis, but the goal of overall arthritis pain relief treatment at this point is to reduce joint pain and inflammation while improving and maintaining joint function, and this can be done best with arthritis creams and gels, as well as arthritis medication.

One of the most common types of arthritis is rhumatoid arthritis.

Rhumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, one that causes redness, swelling, pain, discomfort, and which tends to worsen if left untreated. The inflammation caused by this disease can even affect internal organs of the body, such as the eyes, lungs and heart. Although rhumatoid arthritis is a chronic illness, sufferers may go long periods without any symptoms, while at other times arthritis pain relief treatment is necessary.

It is a progressive disease however, and this means that if left unnoticed or otherwise untreated, it is able and in fact very likely to cause joint destruction and functional disability.

There is no one single cause or factor that is considered as being responsible for rhumatoid arthritis, but there are a few factors that are recognized as being potentially responsible. Infectious agents such as bacteria and fungi have long been connected to this disease, and it is also suspected that certain environmental factors play a role in its development.

The symptoms that distinguish rhumatoid arthritis from other forms of arthritis are the inflammation and soft-tissue swelling of many joints at the same time. This is known as polyarthritis. The joints are usually affected asymmetrically and then progress in a symmetrical fashion as the disease progresses. Unlike other forms of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis, the pain generally improves with the use of the affected joints.

As the disease progresses, the inflammatory activity leads to erosion and destruction of the joint surface, impairing their range of movement and therefore leading to deformity. In the fingers, the bones typically deviate outwards, towards the pinky finger and assume unnatural shapes. Deformities in those suffering from rhumatoid arthritis include the Boutonniere deformity, the swan neck deformity, and the “Z-Thumb” deformity.

Since rhumatoid arthritis is a multisystem disease, other diseases and conditions may form as a result of it. Many patients with rhumatoid arthritis also have anemia. Anemia is a deficiency of red blood cells and/or hemoglobin and results in the reduced ability of oxygen to be carried to the tissues. It is a chronic disease. Sufferers may also experience splenomegaly (the enlargement of the spleen), Felty’s syndrome, and Sjögren’s syndrome (an autoimmune disorder in which immune cells attack and destroy exocrine glands that produce saliva and tears). Dermatological affects include nodules on exterior surfaces. Fibrosis may occur in the lungs either spontaneously or as a result of treatments.

There are several criteria for diagnosing rhumatoid arthritis. Stiffness in the morning that persists for longer than one hour is an example, as is arthritis and soft-tissue swelling of more than three out of 14 joints or joint groups. Arthritis of hand joints, symmetric arthritis, subcutaneous nodules in specific places, a rhumatoid factor at a level above the 95th percentile and radiological changes suggested of joint erosion are also a part of the criteria. At least four of these criteria have to be met in order to establish a diagnosis.

Treatments for rhumatoid arthritis are divided into disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), anti-inflammatory agents and analgesics. DMARDs are known to produce durable remissions and delay or halt disease progression, preventing bone and joint damage in particular. Anti-inflammatory agents and analgesics improve pain and stiffness but do not prevent joint damage or slow down the disease progression.

Knee osteoarthritis involves the loss of cartilage in the joints, which worsens over time. Cartilage in the joint is what keeps the bones of the femur and tibia from rubbing together and generally with age, the cartilage can become weakened and gradually stop being able to do its job. Without the cartilage in place, the pain from knee arthritis becomes more pronounced and may cause eventual loss of mobility.

While knee osteoarthritis is generally seen in the elderly, it can also affect people who are much younger. Although osteoarthritis is the most common form of knee arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis as well as post-traumatic arthritis can also be blamed on some of the pain associated with knee arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition that attacks the cartilage, usually in both knees and post-traumatic arthritis results from an accident or injury.

In addition to the pain associated with knee osteoarthritis, the knee may lock up following a period of inactivity or feel as though it is not going to be able to hold up under the person’s weight when they walk. The associated pain may be worse after sitting for a long period or when climbing stairs or performing exercises that result in a high impact on the knee.

Osteoarthritis Makes Appearance Slowly

Most knee osteoarthritis sufferers experience the pain gradually increasing over time, however it is possible for someone to experience a sudden onset of knee arthritis. Typically however, the first twinges of pain will be experienced as a mere annoyance until more of the cartilage disappears. If a person is over weight, shedding the extra pounds can help relieve the pain as the knees will be responsible for carrying less weight, reducing the impact of the two bones grinding together.

Some changes in lifestyle may also be needed to help relieve the pain with low-impact exercises replacing running and jumping. Swimming and cycling can often help maintain an exercise program while reducing the pain associated with knee arthritis. Anti-inflammatory medications can also relieve some of the pain and reduce any swelling in the joint.

For severe cases of knee osteoarthritis that is not responding to non-invasive treatments, surgery may be needed to alleviate the pain and to restore mobility in knee arthritis sufferers.

There is no single cause of arthritis, it depends on the particular type of arthritis. Symptoms include: joint stiffness, swelling, and pain. The pain can be unbearable at times, making it critical that you inform yourself on the different joint pain relief options that are available.

Arthritis Pain Relief

When it comes to arthritis joint pain relief, there are many options to choose from. Some of the best options are arthritis pain relief creams and gels. They are applied directly onto the skin over your aching joints, and those which cool the skin are especially popular.

Any arthritis product that contains ingredients such as menthol or peppermint will work well on inflamed and swollen skin, becausethe sensation will basically work by distracting you from the pain that is caused by your condition.

Aspirin-like pain rubs are also great for joint pain relief, and these are products which contain salicylates, the same ingredients that are found in aspirin. Not only do these sorts of joint pain relief products offer relief but they also help to reduce joint inflammation. You always want to check with your doctor before using any topical medications however, just to make sure that you will not be putting yourself at risk.

If you have tried several different methods of treatment and nothing seems to be working, then at this point your doctor may decide to put you on arthritis medication. This is medication that is typically taken daily, and which works to help relieve the pain and other symptoms caused by the condition.

Creams, gels and topical medications are never intended to take the place of this arthritis medication, but they should always be tried first, and can also continue to be used even after you have been started on the specific arthritis medication. It is just important to realize that relying on these topical preparations may more often indicate that your main joint pain relief medication is not working or that your arthritis medication is simply not strong enough.
